Official Requirements (Home Affairs + APO Standard)

  • One facial image per applicant, including children — select document type 'Facial image' in ImmiAccount
  • File: JPG only, between 70KB and 3.5MB
  • Pixel dimensions: none published — the '826×1062px' claim is just 35×45mm at 600 DPI, not an official spec
  • Face size: 32–36mm from chin to crown (Australian Passport Office standard)
  • Print standard (paper/passport photos): 35–40mm wide × 45–50mm high, min 200gsm glossy, dye-sublimation print
  • Background: plain white or light grey, contrasting with the face
  • Recency: less than 6 months old
  • Glasses: banned unless irremovable for medical reasons; hearing aids OK, earbuds banned
  • Head coverings: religious only — plain, with the face fully visible
  • Editing: no retouching of any kind (the APO standard bans removing moles, wrinkles or scars; edited backgrounds are listed as unacceptable)

The Real Constraint Is File Size, Not Pixels

Home Affairs publishes no pixel dimensions for the visa facial image — the hard limits are JPG format and 70KB–3.5MB. You position the photo with your face centred inside the upload frame, and files under 70KB fail just as surely as files over 3.5MB.

Some Visas Use Live Capture Instead

Some visa subclasses now capture the facial image live in the Australian Immi App instead of accepting a file upload. Check your application's document checklist in ImmiAccount to see which route applies to you.

Where Our Tool Fits In

The APO standard bans retouching of any kind — even removing moles or wrinkles — so for a visa application use Retouch.im for framing and cropping guidance and submit an unedited original. For uses that accept edited photos: preview free, HD download $1, 300-DPI print sheet $2.

Common Rejection Reasons

  • File is not JPG (PNG/HEIC not accepted for the facial image)
  • File under 70KB or over 3.5MB
  • Retouching or beautify filters of any kind
  • Wearing glasses (medical exceptions only)
  • Shadows or a busy background
  • Photo more than 6 months old

FAQ

What pixel size does an Australia visa photo need?
There are no official pixel dimensions. Home Affairs specifies only: JPG format, 70KB–3.5MB, with your face centred in the upload frame. The '826×1062px' seen online is a 600-DPI conversion of 35×45mm, not an official spec.
Can I wear glasses in an Australia visa photo?
Only if they cannot be removed for medical reasons. Otherwise glasses are banned under the Australian Passport Office standard applied to visa photos.
How do I submit the photo?
In ImmiAccount, attach a file with document type 'Facial image' — one per applicant, including children. Some visa subclasses instead capture the photo live in the Australian Immi App.
