UK Passport Photo Requirements (HM Passport Office)
The UK has specific requirements for both printed and digital passport photos.
- Size: 35×45mm (printed); ≥600×750px for digital applications
- Head: 29–34mm from chin to crown (top of head)
- Background: Plain, uniform light colour; grey or cream is recommended for photographers, and light shades of white can be accepted when contrast is clear
- Expression: Neutral, mouth closed, eyes open
- Glasses: Avoid them; if they must be worn, no tint, glare, reflection or frames covering the eyes
- Recency: Taken within the last month for both paper and digital applications
Digital Passport Photos (Online Application)
For online passport renewal through GOV.UK, your photo must be at least 600×750 pixels, between 50KB and 10MB, in colour, and unaltered by computer software. Do not crop the photo yourself — the system will crop it automatically.
UK Background: Use a Plain Light Colour
HM Passport Office accepts plain light-coloured backgrounds, including light shades of white, cream and light grey. Photographer guidance recommends 5–10% grey; clear contrast with the face is what matters.
