Official Spec (Regular Visa, indianvisaonline.gov.in)
- Format: JPEG only, square — height must equal width
- File size: minimum 10KB, maximum 300KB
- Pixel dimensions: none published by the government portal (see the 190×190 note below)
- Composition: full face, front view, eyes open; head centered, showing the full head from top of hair to chin
- Head height: 1 – 1⅜ inches (25–35mm); eye height 1⅛ – 1⅜ inches from the bottom
- Background: plain light-colored or white; no shadows; no borders
- The uploaded photo must be identical to the one affixed on the printed form
- Print photo affixed on the form: 5cm × 5cm (50×50mm)
The 190×190px Myth
The '190×190px' figure you see on many websites is NOT in the official specification — the government portal publishes no pixel dimensions at all. 190×190 appears to be outdated CKGS-era guidance (the former US outsourcing agent) and appears in neither current VFS nor government specs. Any square JPEG between 10KB and 300KB that meets the composition rules is acceptable.
The e-Visa Route Has Different Limits
Applying through the separate e-Visa channel? Its photo rules differ: JPEG, 10KB–1MB, minimum 350×350px, square. Do not mix the two sets of limits — the regular (paper-form) route is 10–300KB with no pixel minimum, the e-Visa route is ≥350×350px up to 1MB.
Where Our Tool Fits In
The portal warns that incorrect uploads lead to rejection, and the uploaded photo must be identical to the print on your form — so treat editing conservatively: use Retouch.im for framing and cropping guidance and submit an unedited original. For uses that accept edited photos: preview free, HD download $1, 300-DPI print sheet $2.
Common Rejection Reasons
- File not square (height must equal width)
- File under 10KB or over 300KB (regular route)
- Relying on the outdated 190×190px figure
- Borders or shadows in the photo
- Uploaded photo different from the one affixed on the printed form
- Head outside the 25–35mm range or eyes closed
