Current Official Spec (Verified 2026-07-18)

  • Format: JPG/JPEG only, portrait, 3:4 aspect ratio
  • File size: between 512KB and 3.14MB — no explicit pixel bounds anymore
  • Face: 70–80% of the image, centred
  • Recency: taken within the last 6 months; in colour with natural skin tones; in focus
  • Lighting: even — stand 0.5m from the background, photographer 1.5m away; no shadows
  • Expression: eyes open, mouth closed, neutral; hair must not cover the face or ears
  • Glasses: prescription OK if clear, untinted, thin-framed, no glare
  • Head coverings: religious/medical only — must not cover the mouth or sides of the face
  • Must be a photo of you — not a photo of a photo or of your travel document

⚠️ The 900×1200px Spec Is Outdated

The '900×1200px / 2250×3000px, 500KB–3MB' figures still quoted on visa websites and in older INZ-hosted example PDFs are the OLD specification. The current live page (verified 2026-07-18) lists only a file size of 512KB–3.14MB and a 3:4 portrait aspect ratio — there are no explicit pixel bounds anymore.

No Filters, No AI Editing

INZ explicitly bans filters, beautification and AI editing — including changing colour, brightness, contrast or sharpness, cropping the head onto a plain background, skin smoothing and object removal. Turn off your phone's auto-filters before shooting. Our tool is best used here for framing and cropping guidance; submit an unedited original. For uses that accept edited photos: preview free, HD download $1, 300-DPI print sheet $2.

Channel Notes

  • Selfies are accepted ONLY for NZeTA mobile-app applications — not for visa uploads
  • Photographer-supplied files must be under 10MB
  • INZ provides an online error-message tool to diagnose failed uploads

Common Rejection Reasons

  • Filters, beautification or AI edits (including auto phone filters)
  • File under 512KB or over 3.14MB
  • Not a 3:4 portrait aspect ratio
  • Face outside the 70–80% coverage range or off-centre
  • Preparing to the outdated 900×1200px guidance
  • Shadows or uneven lighting
  • A photo of a photo, or of your travel document

FAQ

What are the pixel dimensions for an online NZ visa photo?
There are none in the current spec. INZ requires a 3:4 portrait JPG between 512KB and 3.14MB, with the face covering 70–80% of the image. The 900×1200px figures still seen online are the outdated specification.
Is the 900×1200px requirement still valid?
No — that is the old INZ spec. The current page (verified 2026-07-18) specifies only file size (512KB–3.14MB) and a 3:4 aspect ratio, with no explicit pixel bounds.
Can I upload a selfie?
For visa applications, no — selfies are accepted only for NZeTA mobile-app applications. Have someone else take the photo from 1.5m away.
