- Dimensions: 900–4500px wide × 1200–6000px high, 3:4 portrait aspect ratio
- File: .jpg/.jpeg, 250KB–5MB, colour
- Recency: less than 6 months old
- Background: plain and light-coloured with strong contrast to the face, no shadows or objects — stand at least 0.5m in front of it
- Composition: clear gap around the sides and top of the head; shoulders and upper chest included; face forward; hair out of the eyes
- Expression: neutral, mouth closed, eyes open
- Glasses: prescription OK if not tinted or thick-framed — no sunglasses, a gap between eyes and frames, no glare
- Head coverings: religious/medical only, full face visible
- Editing: none — no editing, filters or AI tools; the image must show your natural appearance; scans of printed photos are NOT accepted
⚠️ Selfies Are Rejected
Someone else must take the photo, standing 1.5m away at eye level — selfies are rejected. Also note the '900×1200px' quoted on many websites is only the MINIMUM of the official range (900–4500 × 1200–6000px), not the required size.
Official Free Tools & Services
Check your photo before submitting with the DIA's free online photo checker (https://onlinephotochecker.passports.govt.nz). Free official photo services are available at Warehouse Stationery and pharmacies. For babies: lay the baby on a plain light-coloured sheet, eyes open, with no other people or objects in frame.
Where Our Tool Fits In
DIA bans editing, filters and AI tools outright, so for an online renewal use Retouch.im for framing and cropping guidance and upload an unedited original that passes the official photo checker. For uses that accept edited photos: preview free, HD download $1, 300-DPI print sheet $2.
