When 600 × 600 is appropriate
The US Department of State accepts a square digital visa image from 600 × 600 through 1200 × 1200 pixels. The file must be JPEG, use sRGB colour and remain at or below 240 KB. Select the US visa specification before export rather than treating 600 × 600 as valid for every visa. A square canvas is only the first check
The head must occupy the permitted area, the face must be centred and frontal, and the background must be plain white or off-white. Refiner lets you position the original photo inside the target crop and verify the output dimensions.
- Square aspect ratio
- Head height and centring
- Neutral, recognisable appearance
- Plain background without shadows
Preserve the original appearance
Do not use beauty filters, face reshaping, synthetic hair, clothing generation or other edits that change identity. This workflow crops and resizes the uploaded original; it does not promise that a generated portrait will be accepted.
Export and verify the JPEG
Export once at the required dimensions and inspect the final file size and sharpness. Repeated JPEG saves can introduce visible artefacts. If the portal rejects the file, recheck the selected application and its current official instructions.
