File size and image dimensions are different
Pixels describe the image canvas; KB or MB describe the encoded file. A portal can reject an image with the right dimensions because the file is too large, or accept the byte size while the face is visibly damaged by compression.
Load the application rule first
File rules vary widely. A US digital visa JPEG is limited to 240 KB, while Singapore passport eServices accept several formats up to 8 MB. Never compress to an arbitrary target before selecting the document. Use a controlled export workflow
Start from the original, crop once, resize once and export once. Reduce JPEG quality gradually only when a maximum byte size is part of the rule. Check the eyes, hair and face edges for block artefacts before submission.
Select the document
Load its format, dimensions and byte range.
Crop and resize
Create the required canvas without upscaling a low-resolution face.
Export once
Choose the highest quality that still fits the portal limit.
Compression cannot fix a non-compliant photo
Reducing bytes does not correct pose, background, expression or head size. Run those checks separately and retake the photo when the source image is blurry or too small.
