Official Digital Spec (PR Portal)

  • Pixel range: 715×1000px minimum to 2000×2800px maximum — any size inside the range is acceptable
  • File: ≤4MB, .jpeg/.jpg (portal troubleshooting text also mentions PNG — a minor inconsistency in the official pages)
  • Background: plain, untextured white
  • Recency: taken no more than 12 months before applying (12 months here, vs 6 for citizenship)
  • Source: commercial photographer/studio required — a professional digital photo or a professionally scanned print; a photo of a print taken with a camera or phone is NOT accepted
  • Glasses: OK with eyes visible and no glare
  • Editing: no alteration of any kind — including technical corrections, cropping the head/shoulders onto a white background, facial-feature edits, glare or red-eye removal, clothing edits and background changes

The '1200×1680' Figure Is Just One In-Range Size

The official requirement is a range — 715×1000 to 2000×2800px. The '1200×1680px' quoted by third-party photo sites is merely one size inside that range, not a fixed requirement. Anything between the official minimum and maximum is acceptable.

Back-of-Photo Data & the Portal Photo Checker

The information traditionally written on the back of a paper photo — your name and date of birth, the studio name and address, and the date taken — is uploaded in the 'photo (back)' field, and a receipt or studio confirmation is required (no guarantor signature). The portal's photo checker may warn about pixel range, background or brightness, but you can still submit the application for an officer to review.

Where Our Tool Fits In

IRCC's no-alteration rule for PR card photos covers even technical corrections and red-eye removal, so use Retouch.im for framing and cropping guidance only and upload the studio's unedited file. For uses that accept edited photos: preview free, HD download $1, 300-DPI print sheet $2.

Common Rejection Reasons

  • A phone photo of a printed photo (only professional scans of prints are accepted)
  • Any editing at all — even red-eye removal or exposure correction
  • Pixel dimensions outside the 715×1000–2000×2800 range
  • Photo more than 12 months old
  • Self-taken photos — a commercial photographer/studio is required
  • Textured or off-white background

FAQ

What is the exact pixel size for a PR card online photo?
There is no single exact size — IRCC specifies a range: 715×1000px minimum to 2000×2800px maximum, ≤4MB, JPEG. Any dimensions within that range are acceptable.
How recent must a PR card photo be?
Taken no more than 12 months before you apply — note this is longer than the 6-month rule for citizenship photos.
Can I edit my PR card photo?
No. IRCC prohibits alteration of any kind, including technical corrections, red-eye removal, and cropping your head onto a white background. Upload the unedited file from your photographer.
