Official OCI Photo Specs (Portal FAQ + Photo-Spec PDF)

  • Format: square JPEG/JPG, minimum 200×200px, maximum 900×900px (the 1500×1500 figure was an older limit)
  • File size: max 200KB — current VFS checklists state a stricter ≤30KB with minimum 360×360px (safe target: 360–900px, ≤30KB)
  • Background: plain light-colored — officially NOT white per the portal FAQ (some missions accept white)
  • Face coverage: about 80% of the frame; no border
  • Physical photo: 2×2 inches (51×51mm), head 25–35mm, eye height 29–35mm
  • Recency: stated as 'recent' — missions specify 6 months
  • Glasses: permitted, but no glare and no tinted lenses
  • Editing: 'Do not retouch or otherwise enhance or soften the photo' (official Photo-Spec PDF)

⚠️ The Background Is NOT White

The OCI portal FAQ explicitly calls for a plain light-colored background and says not white — although some missions do accept white. The safest choice is a plain light (off-white / light grey) background, which satisfies the portal text and mission practice alike.

Signature Upload: A Separate Spec

The signature is a separate upload with its own rules: aspect ratio 3:1 (width:height), 360×120 to 900×300px, JPEG, ≤30KB. For children: babies under 1 year need not have their eyes open in the photo, and rules are relaxed for children under 10.

Where Our Tool Fits In

The official spec bars retouching, enhancing or softening, so for an OCI application use Retouch.im for framing and cropping guidance and submit an unedited original. For uses that accept edited photos, the tool delivers a compliant result in seconds: preview free, HD download $1, 300-DPI print sheet $2.

Common Rejection Reasons

  • Pure white background (the portal FAQ says light-colored, not white)
  • Assuming a 1500×1500px limit — the current maximum is 900×900px
  • File over 200KB (or over 30KB under current VFS checklists)
  • Retouched, beautified or softened photos
  • Signature upload in the wrong aspect ratio or size
  • Glare or tinted lenses on glasses

FAQ

Can the OCI photo have a white background?
Officially no — the portal FAQ requires a plain light-colored background and says not white, though some missions accept white in practice. A plain light (off-white) background is the safe choice.
What is the maximum pixel size for an OCI photo?
900×900px (minimum 200×200px), JPEG, ≤200KB. Current VFS checklists are stricter — ≤30KB and minimum 360×360px — so targeting 360–900px at ≤30KB works everywhere.
What are the OCI signature upload specs?
A separate upload: aspect ratio 3:1 (width:height), 360×120 to 900×300px, JPEG, ≤30KB.
