IRCC Requirements (Temporary Resident Visa)

  • Frame size: at least 35×45mm — 35×45mm is a minimum, not an exact mandate
  • Head height: 31–36mm from chin to crown
  • Quantity: 2 identical photos, black & white or colour, printed on quality photographic paper
  • Background: plain white or light-coloured
  • Expression: neutral, mouth closed, face square to the camera
  • Glasses: non-tinted prescription glasses allowed if the eyes are fully visible (frames must not cover the eyes); sunglasses banned
  • Head coverings: religious only, with full facial features visible
  • Recency: taken within the last six months
  • Editing: digital photos must not be altered in any way

⚠️ NOT the 50×70 Passport Size

The Canadian TRV uses a 35×45mm frame — NOT the 50×70mm frame of a Canadian passport photo. They are different document specs, and submitting 50×70mm passport-size photos with a visitor visa application is a common mistake.

A Paper-Oriented Spec

IRCC publishes no official pixel dimensions or file-size limits for the TRV photo — the specification is written for printed photos, and online application portals digitize the same photo. Scan or photograph your compliant prints at high resolution for online submission.

Where Our Tool Fits In

IRCC states that digital photos must not be altered in any way, so for a TRV application use Retouch.im for framing and cropping guidance and submit an unedited original. For uses that accept edited photos, the tool delivers a compliant result in seconds: preview free, HD download $1, 300-DPI print sheet $2.

Common Rejection Reasons

  • Submitting 50×70mm passport-size photos instead of 35×45mm
  • Frame smaller than the 35×45mm minimum
  • Head height outside the 31–36mm range
  • Digital photo altered in any way
  • Photo more than 6 months old
  • Tinted glasses or sunglasses
  • Shadows or a patterned background

FAQ

Is a Canada visa photo the same as a Canadian passport photo?
No. The TRV (visitor visa) photo frame is at least 35×45mm, while the Canadian passport photo is 50×70mm. Both require a 31–36mm head height, but the frame sizes differ.
How many photos does a Canada visitor visa need?
Two identical photos, black & white or colour, printed on quality photographic paper, taken within the last six months.
Can I wear glasses in a Canada visa photo?
Non-tinted prescription glasses are allowed if your eyes are fully visible and the frames do not cover the eyes. Sunglasses and tinted glasses are not allowed.
