Requirements for Both Channels

  • Size: 50×70mm; face height 31–36mm from chin to crown
  • Background: plain white or light-coloured
  • Taken by a commercial photographer or studio — mandatory
  • Recency: taken no more than 6 months before submission
  • Expression: neutral; glasses OK with eyes visible and no glare; no sunglasses or tinted glasses; religious/medical head coverings OK
  • Editing: no alteration of any kind — colour, brightness, contrast or sharpness changes, cropping the head onto a white background, retouching, red-eye removal and background changes are all explicitly banned
  • Note: citizenship photos explicitly do NOT use passport specs, despite sharing the 50×70mm frame

Paper (Mail) Channel

  • 2 identical colour printed photos, professionally printed on plain high-quality photo paper
  • The back of one photo must show: applicant name, photographer/studio name and complete address, and the date the photo was taken

Online Channel

  • 1 digital photo (colour preferred, black & white accepted)
  • JPG/JPEG with minimal compression, saved directly from the camera unchanged
  • At least 420×540 pixels; approximately 240KB but no more than 4MB
  • A scan or photo of a photographer's print is allowed as a fallback

Where Our Tool Fits In

Citizenship photos must come from a commercial studio and pass a no-alteration rule that even bans red-eye removal — so use Retouch.im for framing and cropping guidance only, and have the studio deliver the final unedited file. For uses that accept edited photos: preview free, HD download $1, 300-DPI print sheet $2.

Common Rejection Reasons

  • Self-taken photos — a commercial photographer or studio is mandatory
  • Missing name, studio address or date on the back of the paper photo
  • Any editing at all, including red-eye removal or brightness tweaks
  • Digital photo under 420×540px or over 4MB
  • Photo more than 6 months old
  • Assuming passport specs apply — citizenship has its own rules

FAQ

Can I take my own Canada citizenship photo?
No. Both the paper and online channels require the photo to be taken by a commercial photographer or studio. Paper submissions also need the studio's name and address written on the back.
What are the online upload specs for a citizenship photo?
One digital photo, JPG/JPEG, at least 420×540 pixels, approximately 240KB but no more than 4MB, saved directly from the camera unchanged.
Is the citizenship photo the same as the Canadian passport photo?
No — although both use a 50×70mm frame, IRCC states that citizenship photos do not use passport specs. Citizenship has its own rules, including the mandatory studio requirement and back-of-photo information.
